THE BEGINNING AND END OF TIME The light subsided. I was on my hands and knees on a stone pathway. I looked around. It was like a filter was being applied over my vision. Everything was drab and foggy and dark. We were in some caverns, some ruins. There was water everywhere. Wait, this is that underwater level from Sonic 1! But red and black for some reason. Tom stood in front of me, watching for something. I looked where he was looking, and a horrible distorted scream echoed throughout the whole chamber. Sonic ran in from where we were watching, being swarmed by red static smoke. He flailed around as it started forcing its way into him. I got to my feet and begged Tom to do something about it, but he said. "We're watching a memory. This was when Sonic lost himself to that thing." "But then why are we here?" I yelped back with. He narrowed his eyes and said, "wait for it..." More smoke showed up, popping into existence all around Sonic. From them, clones of Sonic appeared

ASCENSION The light expanded and enveloped me, and when it subsided, I found myself standing upon grass in a place high in the mountains. Blue stone made up the walls and cliffs around me, while giant brown mountains littered the horizon. Oh right, this was Hill Top, but it was also really hard to see it that way at the moment. The clouds had turned dark, red, and stormy, and they extended high into the sky. Only a small patch of sky at the top of the world remained normal. A sudden explosion shook the entire mountain, and I was knocked onto my hands and knees. The red glow of lava started appearing in various places in the distance, and harsh winds made the embers floating about flick around. I heard him roar again... Sonic. But, no, that isn't Sonic. I can't keep calling him that. Tom called him EXE, and I will too. In a plume of red dust and static above me, EXE appeared. He snapped his head towards me, and dove down at full speed. THE VOID I didn't will my body to move. No point. I didn't try to raise my head. I didn't bother to try and open my eyes. I simply waited. Slowly, I gained the sensation of standing on solid ground. Slowly, the feeling of constriction around me faded. After a while of standing there in my stupor, a wind passing by made my body sway a little. I slowly opened my eyes, but not much changed. I was in a very dark place. The walls and floor appeared to be made of a grainy, ever-shifting material. It was a large and cavernous space. I think there were spiky structures in the distance, but I could not tell for certain. Eventually, a blurry image of Sonic appeared in the distance, walking towards me. I watched his steady approach, and did nothing else. Within the final few feet, he became clear, marked with the changes to his eyes, teeth, and claws that I had last seen him with. He walked around my unmoving body, peering at me like he was doing an inspection. The landscape around me

MY VICTORY I stood up, but I couldn't get my vision working right. Everything was upside down. It hurt my brain to look around like this, but I had to try and figure something out about where I was. There were horrible, wriggling meat tubes hanging down from the ceiling, (I think?) and patchy gray haze covering parts of the stone walls. There were stairs, and before long I could hear someone walking down them. Sonic's voice filled this place, and I could hear the echo his voice had in these desolate halls. "It is time you were made to understand, Bonnie." My eyes darted back and forth, and the response I mustered up was, "What are you?" Sonic passed some of the tubes, and I could now see him walking down the steps. "I am the one who determines everything you do, everything you are. You never had any agency in your world or this world." I butted in, "You're lying! I saved those animals! I defeated Knuckles! I keep escaping from you!" He continued, "You saved these animals

DECAY The blue fizzling air around me mixed with a blinding light as I approached the exit, and when it all went away, I was outside. My head flailed around as I ran. I was too exhausted to keep myself from being anything but a wobbly mess as each foot slammed into the decayed, crunchy, dark brown grass. I couldn't even tell where I was anymore. Colossal stone pillars dotted the grounds around me. The clouds, the water, the trees, everything; it all had these rotted red or brown colors. I turned my head for a brief moment, and saw Sonic standing far behind me. He was unmoving. I turned my head forward, and back again, and he was gone. I ran. I ran. I ran some more. It didn't feel like I could ever get far enough from what just happened. My body decided to put an end to my trek, and I got lightheaded as the toll of so much activity caught up to me. I turned 180, and flopped backwards onto the grass. It felt like tons of tiny, annoying little daggers were crumpling under me as I

PURSUIT We kept floating through the gentle blue haze to an unknown destination. "I'm glad you're okay," Tails said, to break up the relative silence. I asked him, "Do you remember anything from before? Before we woke up?" As he thought, the haze around us faded, and we were standing on solid ground again. We were underground, and as he started to speak, I took in our surroundings. "I remember searching for something from up above. I spotted Sonic, so I flew down to check on him. Something was wrong with him, but I couldn't figure out what it was before I fell asleep." What he was saying had a familiar ring to it, but I still couldn't piece it together quite yet. We finished taking in our surroundings, and looked at each other. With lights in our eyes, and pep in our voices, we both said, "Mystic Cave!". After a moment, we then both took on sour and grumpy expressions, and took turns muttering under our breaths, "Yeah, I never really liked this place. This place sucks. It's all

I thought I felt some rumbling too, but that was gone now. I sat up and looked around. This was a really pretty place, with fluffy round bushes, tall palm trees with huge coconuts, and a flowery grassy field that extended out to the sea. There were huge clouds resting on the water, and the sunlight made them look so bright. There were yellow flowers out far, and red and pink ones close to me. I tried to think about how I got here, but I couldn't remember anything. Oh no! Was this that amnesia thing I heard about? I

THE FIRST VICTIM The screen faded out. I could not fight off this dejection as a level card appeared. "LABYRINTH ZONE Act 3". The character I was playing as was a group of pixels in the form of Sonic the Hedgehog, the way I knew him to be in my youth, in the familiar setting of the level indicated by the level card. I had so many differing branches of thought about what this could mean. If this were some ordinary ROM Hack, this would be the indication that the new content had run out, and so the game reverted to its original form. I knew that wasn't the case at this point. Was Sonic testing my commitment to this situation I found myself in? Was I to prove my understanding through action using His visage of choice? Was... no... it wouldn't be a beam of light amidst overwhelming darkness, a way to alter the history of His world, a chance given to me to avert disaster by a competing power? DR. IVO ''EGGMAN'' ROBOTNIK "HOPE AND DESPAIR" was the final level card. It opened with Robotnik laying on the ground before he then sat up and scrambled to his feet. None of his contraptions were present around him. Great, on foot it is. At least the mechanics should be simple and this should be over quickly. The locale was not from any Sonic game. It was a castle interior with tarnished gold floors curved up to meet the dark grayish-purple bricks that covered the walls in the background, all set to a sad yet peaceful piano melody. I let my ears take in the notes as they left my speakers, and let my head sway for a bit again before I realized this was the music playing in Tails' section, but not reversed. Robotnik appeared to be sporting a grimace of some kind, and his idle involved him looking all around his surroundings before checking his person for something he did not appear to have. He didn't seem to like his predicament. The up key let me view more of this new level art
